The Ultimate Shopping List for Decorating Your Home for Christmas

The Ultimate Shopping List for Decorating Your Home for Christmas

It’s the time of year where decorating takes a turn for the Jolly—Christmas. Setting the perfect Christmas scene in your home isn’t always easy. Many homeowners stick to the same decorations year after year. Others don’t know what’s missing from their list of decorations. There are hundreds of ways to get holiday decorating wrong, but fortunately, there are millions of ways you can get it right.

This time of year provides the perfect space for experimenting. Use your imagination and let your inner child loose. Whether you love glitter, rustic, classic, or something in between, Christmas decorating is all about the magic. Stick to the interior designs you love, and you are sure to make Santa proud.

Here are all of the items on our Christmas decoration shopping list this year.

DOOR DRESSING

Set the tone for guests before they walk in the front door with all the latest door decorations. For the perfect entry decor recipe, follow these steps:

  1. Get two different sized welcome mats. Preferably with the larger size being plain, textured, or a large print. Then, stack a smaller welcome mat on top with a holiday greeting.
  2. Gather 2-3 potted trees. These trees should be various sizes, ranging from mid-size to small. Live trees are an added bonus, and the fact that they’re outside means less clean-up!
  3. Don’t forget a wreath for your entryway. You can choose a faux or real wreath to top off your front door decorations.

HOLIDAY GARLAND

No holiday scene is complete without garland. Cascade faux pine and eucalyptus garland down your railings with or without intertwined lights to add something special to your home. You can even set garland on top of your mantel for extra warmth. Our interior designers love garland made from unique materials. We prefer using wood beaded, knit, pom pom, and popcorn-strung garland for tree draping. It is also great when stringing signage across your fireplace.

CHRISTMAS WALL DECOR

Speaking of using garland among signage: there are plenty of ways to use your wall space to welcome in the holidays. This year we are adding script wall expressions, Christmas scrolls, and winter-inspired artwork in our homes. You can even find creative ways to bring your Christmas traditions to life through wall décor. Whether it is framing sheet music to your favorite Christmas hymn or swapping out photos for images of holidays past, you can make your space a winter dream with some budget-friendly wall décor.

UPDATED ORNAMENTS AND STOCKINGS

The first thing that came to your mind when considering your holiday decorations was most likely your ornaments and stockings. Sadly, many of us don’t have the budget to swap out our tree ornaments every year for something new. While you might not be able to get new tree decorations, you can add in a few new favorites to spice things up. Just get a few new ornaments each year and take away some of your outdated ones. In a couple of years, you will have an entirely new set.

You can also breathe life back into your Christmas decorations with a new collection of stockings. We are loving rustic-style stockings this year.

HOLIDAY PILLOWS

We at Miya Interiors are suckers for pillows, and Christmas is the perfect excuse for getting a new set to adorn your living room. Try adding a few fur and plaid pillows into the mix for your base. Then, grab 1-2 that really make a statement. Together, they will make your sitting areas cozier for all of your holiday festivities.

SWEDISH GNOMES

Handmade Swedish gnomes are a major trend for Christmas this year. Each little gnome stems from traditional Scandinavian design. In fact, take a quick trip to Iceland, Sweden, or Norway, and you will find these gnomes lining shop windows. Bring this Scandinavian tradition to home by popping one or two on your mantle or next to your fireplace.

LOG BUNDLE & BASKET

The last thing we are adding to our holiday decoration shopping list is a log bundle and basket. Dress your fireplace for the season with logs from your backyard or your local décor shop. Simply grab some wood and tie the pieces together with twine for added rustic flair. Throw them in a basket or next to your fireplace and your setting is complete.
